Across ancient legends, sacred texts and spiritual traditions, a profound truth has echoed through time; that beyond the sun of our everyday life, there is another Sun. This was the Great Sun of the Buddhists, the Hypercosmic Sun of the Chaldeans, the Eternal Sun of the Hermetists and the Second Sun of the Maya and the Hopi.
Although the Second Sun cannot be seen in the present day, it was visible in the earlier epochs of humanity. It was believed to be stationed at the center of the cosmos, radiating its light in all direction. Its light was called the “intellectual light” or the “light of wisdom” i.e. the energy that raises our awareness, and awakens our dormant mental faculties.
The Great Sun of the Buddhist Doctrines
In the Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions, Vairocana (meaning "Solar" or "Shining") or Mahavairocana (the Great Vairocana), is the One True Buddha - the unborn, unmanifested source that gives rise to all other Buddhas.
This is why Vairocana is also called the dharmakaya or "truth body" of the historical Buddha i.e. the eternal, omnipotent Buddha out of which all Buddhas arise for the purpose of liberating sentient beings, and to whom they return after their work is accomplished. The dharmakaya was viewed as the Atman or “inner Self” of every Buddha.
These descriptions allow us to infer that Vairocana must be the central Galactic Consciousness, Sgr A*. In an earlier article titled, “Supermassive Black Hole or Galactic Consciousness”, I had argued that the so-called supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is not really a black hole, since it does not behave like one. Instead, it is the central, creative and organizing consciousness of our galaxy or the Galactic Consciousness, which divides itself to form individual souls.
The galactic core or Sgr A* is the dark, unmanifested, creative potential at the center of the cosmos that the Vedic sages called "Brahma", who divides himself and enters into all living beings. The Native Americans venerated this Source as the "Great Spirit", who breathes life into all beings, the Christian mystics knew it as the "Christ Consciousness", which activates the heart center, while the Greek poet Xenophanes lauded it as the "One God", who regulates all things by the power of His mind, without moving here and there.
In addition to being described as the unmanifested source of the Buddhas, Vairocana was also regarded as the Great Sun at the center of the cosmos, seated atop a lotus pedestal. Dr. Adrian Snodgrass writes in the book, The Symbolism of the Stupa, that, Mahavairocana is “the Solar Source from which all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas issue forth as beams of light; and he is the Solar Body of Fruition to which they all return.”[1]
“Whereas the light of the physical sun is partite, shining in the daytime but not at night, the light of the Sun of Wisdom shines brilliantly in all places and at all times…and everywhere throughout the Dharma world. The Great Sun cannot truly be likened to the physical sun except by analogy; the physical sun is subject to the limitations of causality, whereas the Great Sun is wholly transcendent.”[2]
The descriptions of the Great Sun or Supernal Sun are unmistakably pointing us to the brilliant, spherical, nucleus of the Milky Way galaxy. If we think about it, the galactic nucleus is, indeed, the Central Sun of our galaxy, since it remains motionless at the Galactic Center for all time, and all the stars of our galaxy revolve around it. It does not rise or set, and radiates its light and energy at all times.
Apparently, Vairocana or Mahavairocana is the name that the Buddhist philosophers used not only for the central Galactic Consciousness, but also for the galactic nucleus.

Dr. Snodgrass’s statement that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emerge from the Great Sun, and return there after their death, ties in with what I had discussed in the article, “Supermassive Black Hole or Galactic Consciousness”. The Galactic Consciousness divides itself to form individual souls, and initially these souls remain within the galactic nucleus in the form dense star clusters. This is why the galactic nucleus was also called the “Treasury of Souls” and the “Garden of Eden” where man was created.
The individual souls are subsequently exiled to the spiral arms to go though their reincarnation cycles, in order to realize their divine identity. Once they do so, they step off the wheel of reincarnation and return back to the galactic nucleus or the Great Sun.
One of the terms that the early Christians used for Christ was "Sol Justitiae" i.e. the "Sun of Righteousness". Christ was portrayed as a divine source of light which brings righteous justice and healing. The idea probably originated from the Old Testament prophet Malachi, who declared, "But for you who revere my name, the sun of justice will rise with healing in its rays" (Malachi 4:2). In Orthodox Christian iconography, Christ is frequently depicted as the "True Sun".
In the same manner as Vairocana, the “cosmic Christ” was not only the central Galactic Consciousness but also the galactic nucleus or Great Sun or True Sun.
The Eternal Sun of the Hermetists
The Hermetic texts - a collection of writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus - spoke of another sun called the “Spiritual Sun” or “Eternal Sun”. In the book, The Secret Teachings of All Ages, Manly P. Hall wrote of this belief:
“Hermetists believed that there was a "spiritual sun" which ministered to the needs of the invisible and divine part of nature - human and universal. Anent this subject, the great Paracelsus wrote: “There is an earthy sun, which is the cause of all heat, and all who are able to see may see the sun; and those who are blind and cannot see him may feel his heat. There is an Eternal Sun, which is the source of all wisdom, and those whose spiritual senses have awakened to life will see that sun and be conscious of His existence; but those who have not attained spiritual consciousness may yet feel His power by an inner faculty which is called Intuition.””[3]
This is an interesting passage, which requires a bit of reflection. It talks of a “Spiritual Sun” or “Eternal Sun”, which radiates the light of wisdom and sustains our inner Self, and which can be seen only by self-realized persons. Clearly, the Eternal Sun, in this context, refers to the galactic nucleus, which awakens our dormant wisdom by virtue of its radiation. Since the Eternal Sun was seen by people living in the previous Golden Age, when everyone was enlightened, it led to the belief that this Sun can only be seen by persons of great spiritual merit.
The passage also says that, a person who is capable of using his intuition or soul intelligence, can become aware of this Sun and feel its presence. Here, we are being reminded that our “inner Self” is of the same essence as this “Eternal Sun”; and, therefore, anyone who makes an effort to align with his “inner Self” by using his intuitive intelligence, will be able to feel the presence of the Eternal Sun within him.
The essential equivalence and inseparability of the inner Self and the Great Sun or Galactic Consciousness was an idea that was deeply embedded in the spiritual traditions of the ancient cultures.
The Hypercosmic Sun of the Chaldeans
Another counterpart of the Great Sun of Buddhist philosophy is the Hypercosmic Sun of the Chaldean Oracles, which is a collection of visionary sayings of the 2nd century CE. The Chaldean Oracles speak of two Suns – one being the visible sun, while the other is the Hypercosmic Sun, which has a noetic (intellectual) nature.[4] The Hypercosmic Sun is “located beyond the sphere of the fixed stars”, and “it conducts the visible sun”.
The Chaldean Oracles were regarded by the Neo-Platonist philosophers of Greece as divine revelation. Plotinus wrote in Ennead of two Suns, one being the visible sun and the other being an Intelligible Sun[5], located beyond the sphere of fixed stars. According to Proclus, the Chaldeans called the solar world, located in the Hypercosmic region “Entire Light” or “Inner Light”.[6] The Hypercosmic Sun was also called the “time of time”, which seems to encode the information that it regulated larger cycles of time.
The sparse references to the Hypercosmic Sun or the Intelligible Sun by the Chaldeans and the Neo-Platonist philosophers are impregnated with important clues for decoding this ancient mystery. If we ask ourselves, what is the Sun-like entity, which is located beyond the stars of the zodiac, and conducts the visible sun, then the answer that springs forth most readily is the galactic nucleus. Not only does the nucleus resemble the central sun of our galaxy, it is also located beyond the fixed stars, and it guides the revolution of our sun around Galactic Center.
This also explain why the Hypercosmic Sun was called the “time of time”, for it encodes the awareness that the Hypercosmic Sun was in control of the larger cycles of time that govern human civilization. As I have argued in my book Yuga Shift and subsequent articles, it is the AGN Cycle of the galactic core that powers the Yuga Cycle.
Astronomers have found that the EM radiation from the galactic core, Sgr A*, is not constant but fluctuates in a sinusoidal manner. This is called the AGN Cycle of Sgr A*. When the galactic core enters the “active phase” of its AGN cycle, it emits profuse quantities of radiation across the entire EM spectrum. That’s when the galactic nucleus becomes extraordinarily brilliant and is called an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN).
Astronomers have seen that, in galaxies harboring an AGN, the light emitted by the nucleus cuts through the dense interstellar dust clouds and photoionizes the entire galaxy. This means that an AGN must be visible from every corner of the host galaxy!
This is exactly what must have happened in the previous ascending Yuga Cycle. The galactic nucleus would have turned into an AGN, and would have been visible from the earth as a Second Sun, which the ancients knew by many names such as the Great Sun or Hypercosmic Sun or Eternal Sun.
Evidently, the widespread belief in a Second Sun are nothing but the lingering memories of the previous Golden Age, when people could see not one, but two suns! What a wondrous time that must have been.
But, things changed soon afterwards. When the ascending Yuga Cycle ended, the galactic core, Sgr A*, switched off, and the light which had already been emitted from the galactic nucleus echoed in the outer galaxy until it gradually became diffuse and formless. Ultimately, the light faded away from view completely, possibly around the time when we entered the Kali Yuga around c. 4000 BCE.
Since then, the beliefs about the Great Sun or Hypercosmic Sun or Eternal Sun have slowly passed into the realms of myths and legends. People forgot what it meant and if there was a physical reality underlying these esoteric beliefs.
The Era of the Two Suns
One of the thoughts that crossed my mind as I thought about the Great Sun is, how big or bright did it appear to the people living in the ascending Yuga Cycle? Also, at what time of the day or night were they able to see it?
Now, here is an amazing piece of information that I was able to find out: If the galactic nucleus or central bulge of the Milky Way galaxy was visible to us today, it would have appeared to us as big as the sun or the moon! That’s right. The “angular width” of the central bulge, as seen from the earth, is about 0.5 degree (or 30 arc minutes), which is same as the angular width of the sun or the moon.
Isn’t that absolutely incredible! The sun, the moon and the galactic nucleus are of considerably different sizes and are located at drastically different distances from us. And yet, seen from the earth, they appear as spherical balls of nearly the same size. Now, if that does not scream out “Intelligent Design!” I don’t know what does.
What about the brightness of the Great Sun? How bright did it appear to us in the ascending Yuga Cycle?
American physicist and science writer, Michio Kaku, had made an interesting observation in the book, Parallel Worlds. He wrote that, “without the dust, the center of our Milky Way galaxy would probably outshine the Moon, making it the brightest object in the night sky.”[7] Michio Kaku forgot to mention that the central bulge would have appeared as big as the full moon, and outshone it as well!
Now, the interstellar dust clouds that block our view of the central bulge have always been there and are not going away anytime soon. In the previous ascending Yuga Cycle, the galactic core was in the “active phase” of its AGN cycle, and the powerful EM radiation from the Great Sun would have cut through the interstellar dust clouds and reached us. However, a lot of the energy would have dissipated along the way, and the light would have dimmed significantly. Taking that into account, it seems possible that in the Golden Age, the galactic nucleus would have appeared as big and bright as the full moon.
In other words, the Great Sun wouldn’t have been visible during daytime due to the glare from our own sun, but would have come into view after sunset.
In the present day, even though we can’t see the galactic bulge, it is possible to make out its location in the sky, particularly with the aid of telescopes. From November to February in the Northern Hemisphere, the galactic core appears above the horizon (in the southern sky) only during the daylight hours, and, therefore, it cannot be seen due to the glare from the light of the sun.
From early March onwards in the Northern Hemisphere, the galactic nucleus starts becoming visible during the pre-dawn hours and just after dusk. As the months roll on, the galactic core becomes visible for longer periods of time each night, in the dusk and pre-dawn hours, until in June and July it is visible all night.
From July onwards the duration of nighttime visibility gradually diminishes, until the galactic core becomes invisible at night in late October.
This tells us that, during the previous ascending Yuga Cycle, people living in the Northern Hemisphere would have experienced extended periods of dawn and twilight from March to October, since the Great Sun used to become visible in the pre-dawn hours and right after sunset. In June and July, the Great Sun would have been visible all night - even at midnight - and the people of the Golden Age may have needed to pull their curtains at night in order to get a good night’s sleep!
But once we entered the descending Yuga Cycle at the Younger Dryas Boundary at around 10,900 BCE, the galactic core switched off and the “light of wisdom” began to gradually fade away. People wouldn’t have seen the Great Sun anymore, but would have experienced a diffuse glow in the pre-dawn and twilight hours. Hence, for a long time in the descending cycle, people would have experienced longer periods of dawn and dusk than we do today. My guess is that, the diffuse glow would have completely faded away sometime around the time we entered the Kali Yuga, at around 3700 BCE.
The reason why I feel that this explanation is reasonably accurate, is because of a few strands of extremely pertinent information that I gathered from different traditions, which reveal that the people of the earlier ages did, in fact, experience extended periods of dawn and saw the Second Sun right after sunset, until it all came to a cataclysmic end.
The Extended Dawns and the Midnight Sun
A number of clear references to the “extended dawns” of the higher ages had been identified and documented by the Indian scholar and nationalist leader, Balgangadhar Tilak, in his book, The Arctic Home in the Vedas (1903).[8]
Tilak pointed out that that, as per the ancient Vedic texts, a long ritual was to be performed at dawn, addressed to the dawn gods and goddesses, which required the priest to recite not less than a thousand verses. The recitation had to commence after the first light of dawn was seen, and completed before sunrise. Tilak estimated that the recitation of these verses would have taken several hours! How then, he wondered, could it have been completed in the relatively small period of dawn in the tropical zones?
It gets even more perplexing. The Vedic texts also stipulate that, if the recitation of the thousand verses are completed before sunrise, then the priest should perform other sacrifices, or recite other hymns, and if necessary, recite the entire Rig Veda! This implies that, not only was the dawn period extremely long, it was also of variable duration!
In order to explain the extraordinary long period of dawn implies by these ritual practices, Tilak had suggested that the Rig Vedic verses may have been formulated in the Polar Regions, where dawn-like conditions persist for a long time. However, that argument was not very persuasive, since the Rig Veda contains explicit references to the rivers and mountains of northern India, and none to any geographical feature of places outside of India. This clearly shows that the Vedic verses were composed in northern India.
The answer to this predicament lies in the recognition of the fact that, people all over the world, experienced longer dawns and twilights in the higher ages; and the dawns and twilights were of variable duration during the period from March to October. In the first half of the descending Yuga Cycle – which corresponds to the Vedic period - the people did not see the Great Sun anymore, but continued to experience extended dawns and twilights due to the light echo in the outer galaxy.
There is a reference to a “Midnight Sun” in the Roman-era novel Metamorphoses, composed by Lucius Apuleius in the 2nd century CE. The section in the novel which describes the author’s initiation into the Isis mysteries, it is written,
“So listen, and believe in what is true. I reached the very gates of death and, treading Proserpine’s threshold, yet passed through all the elements and returned. I have seen the sun at midnight shining brightly. I have entered the presence of the gods below and the presence of the gods above, and I have paid due reverence before them.”[9]
Many have wondered what the phrase, “seeing the sun at midnight” may have signified, in the context of an initiation rite. I believe that the “Midnight Sun” refers to the Great Sun which was visible at midnight in the months of June and July, during the previous ascending Yuga Cycle. Since the people who lived in those times were highly enlightened, the phrase, “seeing the sun at midnight” became synonymous with “attaining an elevated spiritual state”.
Finally, let us look at a couple of very interesting accounts of the Second Sun preserved in Maya tradition, which backs up the ideas that I have just discussed.
The Two Suns of the Maya
The Maya have intriguing accounts of a Second Sun that was visible in earlier ages. In an article titled, “The Maya Myth about Two Suns”, Prof. Milan Kovac of the Comenius University, Slovakia, shared stories about the Second Sun related to him by the Maya. He had collected these stories during his fieldwork on the mythology and rituals of the Lacandon Maya, who live in the jungles of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The Lacandon are one of a handful of Maya people who had managed to escape Spanish control during the colonial period, by living in small, isolated communities in the jungles of Chiapas. They had little contact with the outside world till around the mid 20th century. Today, there are around 650 surviving Lacandon Maya people. They continue to speak the Mayan language, worship the Maya pantheon of gods, and practice their ancestral customs. Even their physical appearance and dress is very similar to the way the ancient Maya portrayed themselves in their murals and relief carvings.
Needless to say, their self-imposed isolation has ensured that their accounts of the past are in a better state of preservation than most others, and remain undiluted by colonial influences. One of the stories that Prof. Milan Kovac had recorded from the Lacandon Maya goes like this:
“After people were created, the gods decided to give them two lights in the sky: the Sun during the day, and the Moon during the night. The god of rain Mensäbäk did not ask anything, and decided to create the Sun and the Moon on his own. And thus, Mensäbäk made the two celestial bodies on his own, both of them being his work.
However, the Sun and the Moon had already been created by the supreme god Hachäkyum, about which Mensäbäk had no knowledge. When Mensäbäk threw his Sun and his Moon onto the sky, there were suddenly four celestial bodies there: two Suns and two Moons. Hachäkyum, however, did not like it, as people could not sleep. After the Sun rose, the day began; the Sun was losing its strength in the afternoon, coming to the end of its path in the evening; however, a second Sun rose at around six o’clock in the evening, preventing the day to be over. This was the reason why people could not go to sleep.
Hachäkyum said “we cannot leave it as it is. The people we created need to rest at night. And since they are made of clay, they need to sleep.”…Hachäkyum decided to bring the second Sun down from the sky. And he also decided to eliminate the Moon from the sky. If he did not do it, there would still be two Suns and two Moons which could collide at any time.”[10]
This remarkable account states clearly that the Second Sun rose at around six o’clock in the evening, just after sunset, because of which the people were unable to sleep. This is exactly what would have happened had the nucleus of the galaxy turned into an AGN and become visible to us! It would have shone like a Second Sun in the in the pre-dawn and twilight hours from March to October in the Northern Hemisphere.
This is probably why the Second Sun was also known as a Second Moon – since it shone only at night. Over time this could have led to the belief amongst some of the Maya people that there was a Second Sun and a Second Moon.
Another story about the Second Sun related by the Lacandon Maya to Prof. Milan Kovac has its own share of intriguing elements. It contains clues to the cataclysmic events that occurred at the onset of the Younger Dryas period, which marked the abrupt shift from the ascending to the descending cycle of the Yugas:
“There used to be two Suns shining on the earth. One of them was older and bigger, and the other one was younger and smaller. The older Sun was bad and did not let people rest. It was shining constantly, during days and during nights, everything was burnt and people died from heat. The younger Sun shone during the day and rested at night. One day, the young Sun found a tree which had a hollow full of honey, and called its elder brother: “Brother, look, we can get sweet bee honey here.” “Be the first one to climb up,” called the smaller Sun his elder brother…When the big Sun was on the top, the young Sun took an axe and started to cut the tree. He was cutting very fast, and the tree fell soon. The big Sun fell down to the earth. As he was falling, a big bang could be heard, and everything was set in fire. After a while, animals started to jump out from the fire: parrots, deer, coatis, peccaris, monkeys and all animals living in the earth today. This is how animals were created, and people could hunt them. Only the small Sun stayed shining on the earth, having lost its strong brightness and letting people sleep at night. It is the same Sun that shines on our earth even today.”
It is obvious from this story that the older and bigger Sun, which used to shine day and night, and did not let the people sleep, was the Great Sun or the galactic nucleus, which was visible to us in the ascending Yuga Cycle.
The story claims that the “big Sun fell down to the earth” following which, “a big bang could be heard, and everything was set on fire.” This could be a recollection of the cataclysmic events that occurred at the end of the ascending Yuga cycle, and the beginning of the Younger Dryas period, at around 10,900 BCE.
At this time, the galactic core, Sgr A* had entered the “Switch off” phase of its AGN cycle, and, as a result, the Great Sun would have started to fade away from view. Around the same time, fragments of a large comet had struck the earth, setting off a global firestorm that killed off the Ice Age megafauna and triggered the Younger Dryas cooling that lasted for nearly 1200 years.[11]
It is quite possible that, when the ancestors of the Maya saw the blazing comet come down from the sky and strike the earth, they though that it was the “older and bigger Sun” that fell down and set everything on fire.
The Return of the Great Sun
When we reflect on these ancient beliefs and traditions about a Great Sun or Second Sun that was visible in the earlier ages, it becomes clear that a great deal of pertinent information about the earlier epochs of humanity and the momentous events of those times, have been preserved in these accounts; and, as such, they are of immense importance to us, particularly as we stand at the threshold of another dramatic shift between the ages, when the Great Sun will once again return to adorn our skies.
The Hopi believe that two suns will appear in the sky when we transition out of the Fourth World into the enlightened consciousness of the Fifth World, when “humankind will awaken from their slumber and realize their true purpose here”. In the book, Last Cry: Native American Prophecies & Tales of the End Times, Dr. Robert Ghost Wolf writes that,
“This has been foretold as the reappearance of two suns in our heavens. This will not be the first time this occurrence has been experienced by the evolving Earth species...To the Hopi Sinom (elders), we already have two Suns. One is hidden behind the present Sun we see everyday. Because of where the Earth is in its orbit it is hidden from our view.”[12]
In my book, Yuga Shift, I had mentioned that there are verses in the Mahabharata that foretell the appearance of a Second Sun of great effulgence at the end of the descending Yuga Cycle. For instance,
“I launched with the might of my arms, and in wrath with mantras, the great powerful discus Sudarshana…and rising into the sky, it seemed like a second sun of exceeding effulgence at the end of the Yuga.”[13]
“The Kauravas on that occasion could not gaze at Jaya (Arjuna) who seemed to be possessed of the energy of the all-destroying Sun that rises at the end of the Yuga.”[14]
The term “Yuga” in these verses refers to the entire “Yuga Cycle”, and, to be more specific, the descending Yuga Cycle of the past 12,000 years. The exceedingly brilliant Second Sun that rises at the end of the Yuga Cycle has been described as an “all-destroying force”, which, I believe, pertains to its ability to destroy or dissolve anything that harbors evil.

Since we have already stepped into the ascending Yuga Cycle on March 21st, 2025, with the end of the Kali Yuga, the appearance of the Great Sun shouldn’t be too far away. In Yuga Shift, I had proposed that the galactic core, Sgr A* will enter into its “active phase” sometime during the 1200-year period of Ekpyrosis that follows. And already, there are clear signs that Sgr A* is in the process of entering into its active phase.
In 2025, the James Web Space Telescope spotted Sgr A* emitting blindingly bright flares of light (in the mid-Infrared spectrum) on a daily basis, along with many shorter flashes of lesser intensity. This has never happened before. The galactic core has been known to emit radio light and occasional X-ray flares, but blinding flashes in the mid-IR spectrum is completely new. It is a sign that things are shifting on a grand, cosmic scale, which will change everything about our reality and our way of life.
How long will it be before the nucleus of the Milky Way turns into an AGN, and we can see the Great Sun? That is a difficult question to answer, because things take time to shift on a galactic scale. But my hope is that, it will happen sooner rather than later. Who knows, maybe by the time we are in the 2040s, we may begin to see the faint outline of a Second Sun in the pre-dawn and twilight hours. Of course, I will be thrilled if the Great Sun appears even earlier than that, to guide our way through these times of transition.
The ancients assure us that the “light of wisdom” of the Central Sun will awaken our dormant mental faculties, dispel our fears and ignorance, dissolve evil in all its manifestations and allow us to align with the truth, love, bliss and joy of our inner Self – which is a fractal of the Galactic Consciousness that lies at the core of the Great Sun.
